The Asian Longhorned Beetle

Avery White

Origin

- The Asian longhorned beetle came from Asia: China and the Korean peninsula.

-These beetles actually aren't in Missouri yet, but they might soon.

- If you see one, report it to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

How they got here

- They likely came on ships with solid wood packing material.

-They have traveled to other states by going on trains with the same wood packing material, often as larvae.

Effect on the Environment

-These beetles damage trees by laying their eggs in the tree

- The larvae will eat the tissue in the tree that distributes nutrients.

- It creates tunnels in the tree, hollowing it.

- After it is fully grown, it will chew its way out of the tree, creating holes.

- It will then eat the bark and leaves off of the tree.

Population Control

- Buy local firewood when camping.

- Report them if you see one, and kill it.

- When there is an infestation, state officials will "quarantine" the trees, preventing the spread of the beetles.
