Different Dysrhthmias

Different Dysrhthmias

Two kinds of heart dysrhythmias, abnormality of the rhythm or rate of the heart ;

1) trachycardias and 2) bradycardias

Bradycardia is the abnormally slow heartbeat that is defined as fewer than 60 beats per minute

Trachycardia is the abnormally rapid heartbeat that is defined as high as 100 beats per minute

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Lets get to know some general information about your heart condition

CAUSES

(Bradycardia, 2017)

CAUSES

Age

changes in the heart that are resulting of aging, over time creates heart tissue damage

Disease

coronary artery diesease, heart attacks and infections just as endocarditis and myocarditis

Prescription problems

some medications that are used for treating heart problems or high blood pressure such as beta - blockers, antiarrhthmics and digoxin

Slow Electrical Impulses

conditions such as hypothyroidism or an electrolyte imbalance such as having too much potassium in the blood can slow the electrical heart rate that controls rhythm

Birth disorder

a heart dsorder that would've been present at birth

a repeated disruption of breathing during sleep

Sleep Apnea

RISK FACTORS

AGE - more common in older adults 65 and older

HIGH OR LOW BLOOD PRESSURE

RISK FACTORS

SMOKING

HEART DISEASE RISKS - the same factors that increase your risk for heart disease also increase your risk of bradycardium

There are some factors that could've increased your risk of getting bradycardia

HEAVY ALCOHOL USE

PSYCOLOGICAL STRESS OR ANXIETY

(Thompson, 2017)

SYMPTOMS

SYMPTOMS

Syncope

In severe cases, a slow heartbeat could mean low blood supply to the brain and other organs, symptoms can be life threathening and may even result in death

Confussion or Memory Problems

refers to fainting or near fainting

Palpitation

Dizziness or feeling lightheaded

Feeling tired difficulty exercising

Chest Pains

Shortness of Breath

feeling that your heart fluttering

(Bradycardia, 2017)

(Thompson, 2017)

SIGNS

Bradycardium is a sign that the heart's natural pacemaker isn't working and the electrical impulse pathways to create a heartbeat are disrupted

SIGNS

Men & women 65 years old and above are most likely to to develop a slow heart rate that needs treatment

If the resting heart rate is lower than 60 beats per minute in young adults or athletes because of frequent exercise, this is considered normal and no treatment is necassary

(Thompson, 2017)

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

DIAGNOSIS

How do we identify your condition?

May need to use portable electrocardiogram since EKG can only detect bradycardium, slow heart rate when its occuring

Holter monitor - monitors heart for a day or so

Event recorder - montiors heart activtiy for a few weeks. You push a button when you feel symptoms to record hearts activity at that time

TREATMENT

Luckily there are treatment options availble to increase heart rate and blood supply to the body and cure your bradycardium

PACEMAKER

A pacemaker will be placed under the skin if there is damage to the heart's electrical system causing it to beat slowly, thus increasing the amount of beats pers minute

CHANGES IN MEDICATIONS

If the medication being taken is responsible for slowing the heart rate down, the doctor may adjust the dose or prescribe a different medicine

If the medicine cannot stop being taken and there are no alternative, a pacemaker is recommended

UNDERLYING CAUSE

Treating an underlying condition that slows the heart rate down such as hypthyrodism or an infection, the condition should be treated accordingly for the symptom to be treated

SLEEP APNEA

If sleep apnea is suspected, your doctor might request to conduct a series of tests to monitor your sleep and heart rate
