Windscale Fire Nuclear Disaster

Lindsay, Kayley, and Gregory

Background

Overview

*The fire happened on October 10th, 1957

*It was ranked in severity at level 5 out of a possible 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale

*The Windscale plant consisted of two gas-cooled nuclear reactors.

*There was a routine heating of the No. 1 reactor’s graphite control blocks got out of control

*That caused adjacent uranium cartridges to rupture

Environmental Impacts

Environmental Impacts

*The marine environment of the Irish Sea also suffered

*83,000 liters of radioactive acid leaked into the North Sea

*It contributed to radioactive pollution of the Atlantic Ocean

*The land around the accident is now more vulnerable to a variety of risks

Economic Impacts

*The final cost of cleanup of the Windscale plant is estimated at 30 million dollars

*It was expected to be paid fully in 2018

*Milk produced in a 500-square-km of the accident was banned

Human Impacts

*The Windscale fire and the ensuing fallout, are estimated to have caused at least 190 cases of cancer, more than half of which were fatal.

*a single nuclear explosion can generate an intense pulse of thermal radiation that can start fires and burn skin over large areas.

* Contact with radiation from uranium can also affect your health possible health effects include lung cancer, bone cancer, and impaired function of the kidneys.

Affected area
