OPAL VIOLA VICTORIA BEAR SHEILD

Amaya, Jayda, Kennedy, Tyanna

Paraphrase

Start Here

Opals first few pages are her sitting at the powwow in support of the boys. She is reminiscing on the times she'd taken the boys to see the games. She watches the blurred crowd and she enjoys it being blurred, gives her some sort of comfort. Moving onto the next few pages, Opal hears gunshots and panic begins to spread all throughout the powwow. After Opal had been there to support her boys in partaking in their culture, trauma she associates her culture with has now become true once again. After the gunshots, Opal is with her family in the ER and she begins to pray and pray. She mentions that if she says her prayer out loud it will work. She pays close attention to the doors and doctors around her, it seems to be grounding her so that she can listen to what the doctor has to say about her grandson.

Motif: Trauma Assoiatiated with Native Culture & Doors

Motif

Anaylsis:

- Opal as a young girl used the teddy bear as a way to express her internalized thoughts about things she could not speak at her young age. Now that she is older the prayer at the end is her interalized thoughts coming to life, her words have power and meaning and we think that her motif has to do with finnaly breaking free of her own mind and being able to use her words as she's always wanted to.

"She hears something coming from a place she thought she'd closed off forever a long time ago. The place where her old teddy bear, Two Shoes, used to speak from.... She says it all out loud. Stay. She revongnizes that there is power in saying the prayer out loud (Orange 285).

Irony Examples

Irony

- "Opal doesn't know how she doesn't think to do it" (Orange 78).

- "Did someone really come to get is here? Now? (Orange 78).

- This is verbal irony as it shows how clearly she knew that the boys were her first thought on her mind and she had to have thought to call them because she did call them.

- This is dramatic irony because all throughout the text the reader knew about the powwow and that someone was planning to attack it, so her saying this was very ironic.

Irony Examples Contiuned

- "She would scream the thought if you could scream thoughts" (Orange 284)

- This is Verbal irony again as she can speak her thoughts but because the thoughts that she was having were so bad she felt as if she couldn't speak her mind that moment to keep everyone around her feeling better

Irony Pt.2
