Rosa Acevedo Castellano

US HISTORY

Assignment 4: Anti-Federalist / Federalist Project

Anti federalist

The Anti-Federalists were a group of Americans who objected to the creation of a stronger U.S. federal government and opposed final ratification of the U.S. and diverse coalition of people who opposed ratification of the Constitution.

ANTIFEDERALIST

Their government was formed in 1781 by the Articles of Confederation, which had granted the predominance of power to the state governments.

They opposed the ratification of the 1787 Constitution.

Patrick Henry

(May 29, 1736 – June 6, 1799)

He was an American attorney, planter, a brilliant orator and a major figure of the American Revolution.

He is well known for his declaration to the Second Virginia Convention (1775): "Give me liberty, or give me death!"

Henry

He served as the first and sixth post-colonial Governor of Virginia, from 1776 to 1779

FEDERALIST

FEDERALIST

They were enthusiastic supporters of a powerful and vigorous national government.

They eared a central government that was too strong and too far away.

The only thing they worried about was having a weak national government.

The Federalists believed that a sufficiently powerful national government would strengthen the fragile union and be able to promote the public good.

(1751-1836)

He was a founding father of the United States and the fourth American president, serving in office from 1809 to 1817.

He is hailed as the "Father of the Constitution" for his pivotal role in drafting and promoting the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I will support Federalism because:

Equal states power

They were more organized

Protection of people's rights

They had a common belief

Why should you support Federalism?

They didn't share one unified position on the proper form of government.

It was necessary to “create a more perfect union” in order to improve the relationship among the states

They wanted to preserve the sovereignty and structure of the states.

Strong vs. Weak

National Government

1

Federalists wanted a strong federal government while the Anti-Federalists wanted a weak federal government with strong state government rights.

Supporting the Constitution vs. Opposing the Constitution

I´ll support the Constitution because is a good idea.

The 1st US government was a one-house legislature, that couldn´t raise money because it relied on the states for military power and was seen as ineffective and weak.

It tried to balance the power between the central and state governments. It was the best way.

2

Strong vs. Weak National Government

Federalists wanted a strong federal government while the Anti-Federalists wanted a weak federal government with strong state government rights.

3

Having a strong National Government can best emphasize with weak country governments

How federalism Supports Small Farmers or Merchants and Business Owners.

Federlism suppoprted them by letting poeple having those shops and owning business.

4

They helped wealthy merchants, conservative small farmers with businesses, national bank and tariffs

Bill of Rights Necessary or Not

Federalists thought that was not necessary because the people and the states kept any powers not given to the federal government.
