THE IMPORTANCE OF SAVING OUR OCEANS FROM POLLUTION

Devan Philbrook + Gabby Garcila

THE ISSUE, What is the basic issue?

THE ISSUE

GARBAGE + CHEMICALS IN THE OCEAN = MARINE POLLUTION

  • The pollution begins on land and is the waste we produce ourselves.

  • Most of it comes from land-based activities, while the rest comes from from ships.

  • Garbage in the ocean comes from trash from trash cans, the streets, and landfills that gets blown into sewers, rivers, or directly into the ocean.

  • Chemicals also enter the sea through runoff or spills.

  • Plastics are not biodegradable, they cannot be broken down meaning they accumulate in our oceans, because they have no other place to go.

IMPACT ON THE FUTURE

THE IMPACT ON THE FUTURE

  • Marine life is exposed to various risks such as plastic ingestion, malnutrition, exposure to toxic chemicals, and plastic entanglement
  • As plastic and toxic chemicals enter the marine food web, the human food chain becomes vulnerable as well
  • Entire communities — changing social behavior, altering the local economy, and threatening natural and cultural resources.
  • Pollution in oceans and seas contributes to climate change

4Ocean gives us hope. Their goal is to end the plastic crisis that our ocean is facing. They have removed over 4 million pounds of trash in under 2 years.

HOPE

Where it began...

When two guys, Alex Schulze and Andrew Cooper visited Bali in 2015, they were perplexed by the amount of plastic on the beach and in the ocean. The two also noticed local fishermen coming in each day discouraged by nets filled with more plastic than fish.

Story

How?

How do they operate

First, they establish plastic economies around the world by paying fishermen whose livelihoods have been affected by pollution to catch plastic. The operation is funded by the sale of bracelets made from the recovered materials. Each bracelet purchase removes one pound of trash from the ocean & coastlines.

Positive Change

  • They have cleaned the ocean and coastlines in 27 countries so far!

  • They are employing struggling fisherman

  • Through these bracelets, they are bringing people all over the world together in having a common accessory that spreads awareness for marine pollution and cleanup efforts.

Impact

Here are some awesome images from their projects!

STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

WHAT CAN WE DO??

WHAT WE CAN DO

#1

STOP YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM!

1. Reduce your use of single-use plastics and your dependency on plastics

2. Recycle and dispose properly

3. Participate in cleanups

If you want...

  • Buy a 4Ocean bracelet to support cleanups. Purchasing one bracelet means cleaning our oceans of one pound of plastic.

Use your voice! Spread the word about the issue. Support bans. Support organizations addressing plastic pollution. The situation may not be too scary today, but not far from now, it won't only be the sea life that is hurting, it will be us too. SPEAK UP!!!!!

How does this make us feel?

HUMANS VERSUS THE CHANGE

How does this make us feel? Not just physically but mentally, too.

We share our feelings and feelings from peers.

Hi my name is Devan, and this is how I feel...

Devan

"Hearing this type of thing on the news everyday really scares me. I wonder what my future will be like for me and my kids? I try to tell myself that their are many things being done, eventhough we live in the nation the produces the most CO2 in the world! We need help, starting with a new president and a science breakthrough in order to save our future."

"I ask all the time, why do people not see that climate change is an issue? It's going to hit our generation the hardest." -Devan Philbrook

Hi my name is Gabby and this is how I feel...

Gabby

"I believe this a very urgent issue for not only our generation but for all of the ones that follow. We need to quickly improve the current conditions of our oceans now because as a world we depend on our oceans and our oceans are depending just as much on us right now."

Peer Thoughts

After interviewing some peers...

"It sucks, it's scary" -Sophia

"I feel pretty depressed, lowkey" -Cole

"It's bad, It's bad" -Drew

"It's a bad thing" -Roma

"I think it is real scary and not enough people are educated enough to the point to where we can make change. We need it to be more projected everywhere." -Alexandra
