It is important to build a safe environment for the youth, whether or not they are LGBTQ. Building a strong connection with the LGBTQ youth to demonstrate acceptance and keep the lines of communication open. Accept them for who they are, regardless of how they identify, reveal or conceal their sexual identity. Also be sure to protect all youth's privacy. Be careful not to disclose or discuss their sexual identity with other's before discussing it with the child first.
A study has been shown as of 2020, nationwide more U.S high school students who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual report having been bullied on school property (51%) and cyberbullied (49%) in the past year, than their heterosexual peers. 55.5% of LGBTQ students feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, and 38.7% because of their gender expression.
When it comes to bully prevention,it is important to remember that these gay bullying statistics will never go down if actions aren't taken. Bullying can include verbal harassment, physical harm, social exclusion, and cyber threats. Bullying behaviors are repeatable, targeted and come with long- lasting consequences.
