The term Rhythm and Blues or R&B was created to replace the controversial phrase " race music". R&B relied hugely on the sound of blues music and was solely marketed to African Americans. It was considered to have a strong beat with influences from more traditional blues.

It is believed that many white artist stole music from black artists and capitalized on it for example when Pat Boone was made to record Little Richards song Tutti Frutti. Boone's recording topped higher than Richards.
