  • St. Josephine Bakhita was born in 1869 in Sudan.
  • While she was working in the field with her family, she was kidnapped.
  • Due to the fear that she experienced, she could not remember her name so her captors decided to name her Bakhita.
  • She was victim to several measures of torture at the hand of her masters.
  • When St. Josephine was left with the sisters of her mistress, she came to know God.

Once St. Josephine learned of God, she was so grateful that she even expressed gratitude to her captors, as she likely would not have encountered Christ without them. When she was declared to be free in Venice, Bakhita stayed with the Canossian Sisters of her mistress to deepen her faith in God.
