Men and women in civilian clothes came out of large vans. It is believed that they are going to help the Jews.

A bed breaks and falls on top of Ellike and her mother. Laura, Ellike's mother, is badly hurt in the accident but Ellike makes it out okat.
Ellie finds it hard to believe "that the little children are trampled underfoot in the gas chamber and that the stronger adults struggle like wild animals to reach pockers of air high up and trample the weaker ones, and the little children."
Ellie and some other girls help Laura to Zahlappell. Then find out that there will be selection the next day.
Laura passes selected however Ellike does not. Ellike runs to the end of the line and holds a dress over the wound on her leg so she passes and then goes to find her mother.
Ellike jumps on the back of an SS woman and the SS woman didn't kill Ellike.
The inmates arrive in Augsburg and the soldiers are way nicer than the previous camps.

While being transported on a train the train comes to a halt, then suddenly two male inmates open the door to the train and tell the women that they are free. Ellie and Laura stay near the train in search of Bubi. They find Bubi alongside the train. Moments later shots ring out and the surving inmates file back onto the train and the train begins to move.
The inmates went to the windows of the train to recieve soup when sudden machine-gun fire bursts out.
The inmates finally get liberated. A middle-aged German approaches Ellike and talks to her. Ellie asks the woman "How old do you think I am?" "Sixty? Sixty-two?" The woman replies. "Sixty? I am fourteen. Fourteen years old." The women makes the dign of the cross and walks away into the crowd
Laura, Bubi, and Elvira all arive back home. All of their things are gone and there are piles of poop in every room. Ellike's father has not come home yet. They find out that their father isn't coming home becuase he had died.
They recieved a leter that was addressed to Ellie's father from his brother saying how he wants to help them come to America. Ellie didn't want to go to America but she was out-voted by Bubi, and Laura. So they are going to America.
