Ethics

Ethically correct?

The main consequentialist theory of ethics in both industries would be ‘egoism’.

Egoism is all about the concept; ‘me,myself and I’.

Everyone is out for what they can get for themselves and don’t think about others.

#MeToo

#MeToo Movement: Film

  • Tarana Burke is a civil rights activist from The Bronx, New York who founded the movement. first said “me too,” twenty years ago.
  • The movement started up again in Hollywood in 2017 and 2018 due to the ‘Weinstein effect’.
  • On Facebook, the hashtag was used by more than 4.7 million people in 12 million posts during the first 24 hours.
  • Eighty-five women have accused Weinstein of inappropriate to criminal behavior ranging from requests for massages to intimidating sexual advances to rape.
  • Angelena Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cara Delevingne and Ashley Judd
  • Many of the award ceremonies such as the Oscars, are consumed by female actors speaking out and encouraging change in the industry.
  • One great example of a speech was Frances McDermond's acceptance speech in 2018.

Frances McDermonds Oscar Acceptance Speech 2018:

#MeToo Movement: Music

  • Many artists write songs about present day issues and one of them, back in 2018 was the ‘Me Too era’.

EXAMPLE: FLETCHER

  • ‘FLETCHER’ released a song in 2018 called ‘I Believe You’.
  • She stands with her fellow females who have been affected by sexual harassment and oppression
  • Some lyrics in the song include:
  • "Are you losing your mind thinking what will it take to make somebody listen to you? Me too."
  • “Did they tell you "You were asking for it by what you were wearing"

  • Kelly Clarkson and John Legend are rewriting the well known Christmas song 'Baby it's Cold Outside'
  • Since some think “Say what’s in this drink (No cabs to be had out there)" implies date rape, the duo have changed it to "What will my friends think? (I think they should rejoice) / If I have one more drink? (It's your body, and your choice)"

Gender pay gap

Gender Pay Gap:

Music Industry:

Film Industry:

  • Male Hollywood stars earn $1.1m more per film than their similarly experienced female co-stars
  • Gender pay gap grew with age, “From childhood to middle age, it remained at about $1m, but when stars turned 50 it increased to an average of just under $4m per film.”(Doward and Fraser, 2019)
  • April 2017, showed 33.8% pay gap
  • Warner - 49% gap
  • Universal - 29.8% gap
  • Sony - 22.7% gap
  • "We’re a company that’s committed to achieving full gender equality at every level of our business.” - Warner Music (Eliezer, 2019)

Example of Gender Pay Gap:

American Hustle.

“The three main stars, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams, each worked for similar amounts of time – about 45 days’ filming. But while Bale and Cooper earned $2.5m each and commanded 9% of the profits, Adams earned $1.25m and 7% of the profits.”(Doward and Fraser, 2019)

Amy Adams

Christian Bale

Bradley Cooper

What's to come...?

For the gender pay gap in the music industry:

Warner Music - January 2019 = 4% reduction,

Revenue in the global film industry is to increase from about 38 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 to nearly 50 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.

The issues in both industries are becoming more obvious and people aren't afraid to speak out anymore. Both industries are making slow but steady progress with equality.
