Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT)

Presented by Anna Sepulveda, SPTA

What is it?

  • An occlusion of Blood Flow applied to upper or lower extremities via a cuff/tourniquet device

Introduction

  • Provides the benefits and results of strength training without using heavy loads

History

History

  • Originally used in Japan known as "KAATSU" in the 1960's and within the military for limb salvage

Today...

Johnny G. Owens, MPT

  • Referenced by APTA as the "Trailblazer'" for bringing BFRT into the US.
  • Since 2012 has been using "Personalized" Blood flow restriction training

Today

Companies like Athletico have implemented a similar device into their practice.

Research Study

Research

  • 28 lower-limb injured male participants

  • Ages: 18-50 y/o

  • Injuries:
  • PFPS
  • ACL reconstruction
  • Ankle injury
  • Projectile blast related injury

Study Results

Results

Twice daily BFRT at 30% 1RM showed:

"significant improvement in lower limb muscle hypertrophy, strength, and function after three weeks of inpatient therapy compared to high load conventional training"

Women with Knee Osteoporosis

Additional Research

BFR to a 30% 1RM resistance training program:

Isotonic bilateral leg press strength and isokinetic knee extensor strength significantly more

compared to the same program without BFR

How?

Additional Research Conclusions:

How?

Resisted exercise at intensity levels lower than 50% 1RM with moderate occlusion:

Plasma growth hormone concentration

Electrical activity of targeted muscles

# of fast twitch fibers

  • Hypertrophy

  • Muscle strength
