What is Skin Cancer?

Skin Cancer is a growth of skin cells. It happens in areas often where you are exposed to the sun. It can also form in places that don't normally get sun exposure.

What is Skin Cancer?

There is three main types of skin cancer

- Basal Cell Carcinoma

- Squamous Cell Carcinoma

- Melanoma

Different types of skin cancer

What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma? (BCC)

Basal Cell Carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that starts in the Basal cells BCC often appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin. Basal Cell Carcinoma often occurs on areas of the skin that are mainly exposed to sun.

- A pearly white, skin-colored or pink bump that is translucent

- A brown, black or blue lesion

- A flat, scaly, reddish patch

- A white, waxy, scar-like lesion

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

Is it Dangerous?

Basically Basal Cell Carcinoma is the least dangerous type of skin cancer. They rarely spread or become life-threatening, even if it seems small it can be deeper into the skin.

What Is Squamous Cell Carcinoma? (SCC)

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) It is usually found on areas of the body damaged by UV rays from the sun or tanning beds. Sun-exposed skin includes the head, neck, chest, upper back, ears, lips, arms, legs, and hands. SCC is a fairly-slow growing skin cancer, so if found early enough, ways to treat it includes surgery's and some medications

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Is it dangerous?

Squamous Cell Carcinoma is usually not life threatening, but it can get aggressive/tough to the skin.

What Is Melanoma?

Melanoma is the most aggressive type of cancer of the three, and it kills nearly 8,000 Americans each year. That's nearly one person every hour. Melanomas typically occur in the skin, but may rarely occur in the mouth, intestines, and eye. Ways to treat Melanoma includes surgery and therapy.

Melanoma

Is melanoma dangerous ?

4 Treatments for skin cancer

not the only treatments available

Treatments

1.) Simple excision- the act or procedure removing by or as if by cutting out especially: surgical removal or resection.

2.) Radiation therapy- the treatment of disease, especially cancer, using X-rays or similar form of radiation.

3.) Cryosurgery- surgery using the local application of intense cold to destroy unwanted tissue.

4.) Mohs micrographic- The cure rate for surgery is the highest of all treatments for many skin cancers - often approaching 99%

Why should people care?

Why should people care

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. From ages 15 to 39, men are 55 percent more likely to die of melanoma. Even a single sunburn can increase a person's risk of skin cancer. Melanoma is the most common skin cancer in children and teens. If you were born in 1935, you might be the one of 1,500 who develops an aggressive form of skin cancer called invasive melanoma. But if you were born in 2000, your chances spike to 1 in 75. If children born in 2010 could have a 1 in 50 shot of developing skin cancer. Plus another way to get skin cancer is by family. 5% to 10% of cancers develop because the person has inherited a change in a gene. Between 2 and 3 million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year.
