Around the years of 1884-1889, the constitution of Japan was set. A constitution is a group/body of princibles, that help set laws.

Why was it important?

-The Meiji Restoration was a total reinvention of Japan.

-Japan adopted to political and economic structures, social customs, and technology of the Western powers.

- "After the Meiji Restoration (1868), Japan's leaders sought to create a constitution that would define Japan as a capable, modern nation deserving of Western respect while preserving their own power."

- Voting restrictions, limited 5 percent of the adult male population, loosened next 25 years, resulting in universal male suffrage. Most political party's power was then limited in the 1920s, but in the 1930s the military was able to exert control without violating.

- Samurai/military dictator/shogun, ruled over everyone.

((The shogun was a member of the Tokugawa clan.(last feudal Japanese military government, which existed between 1600 and 1868."))

- The overthrow of the Tokugawa bakufu in Japan in 1868, or "restoration," of power to the imperial government under the Emperor Meiji. 1868-1912. It made Japan into a "nation" and it was committed to the wealth & power of the kind Western industrial nations possessed. Tokyo became the new capital.
