Smart Actuators

Whats SMA?

In metallurgy, a shape-memory alloy (SMA) is an alloy that can be deformed when cold but returns to its pre-deformed ("remembered") .

Abstract

Conventional actuators used are electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic, but they have difficulties in generating significant forces when their size and weight are scaled down. Non conventional or active materials are a class of materials that can be deformed upon the application of a control signal, which may be good alternatives to conventional actuators. They are more space-efficient and can lead to low-weight actuation systems.
