Lesson 8-1

Using Mentl Math to Divide

In today's class, we will learn how to:

  • Recognise the different parts of a division sentence
  • Use patterns to divide
  • Use drawings to help us

Division

Before we begin, let's review what the different parts of a division sentence are called:

Lesson 8-1

24 ÷ 6 = 4

Quotient

Dividend

Divisor

Do you remember...?

Remember when we were learning how to multiply by multiples of ten? To find the asnwer we can simply add the total number of zeros from each product.

Let's see...

Example: 8 x 400

Basic fact:

8 x 4 = 32

Now add the zeros:

8 x 400 = 3,200

We can use the same pattern in division!

Let's see!

Example: 3,200 ÷ 8

Basic fact:

32 ÷ 8 = 4

Now add the zeros:

3,200 ÷ 8 = 400

Pattern:

Pattern

35 ÷ 7 = 5

350÷ 7 = 50

3,500 ÷ 7 = 500

35,000 ÷ 7 = 5,000

350,000 ÷ 7 = 50,000

Pattern:

Pattern

63 ÷ 9 = 7

630÷ 9 = 70

6,300 ÷ 9 = 700

63,000 ÷ 9 = 7,000

630,000 ÷ 9 = 70,000

You can always use the inverse operation to check your answer!

6,300 ÷ 9 = 700 ?

Remember!

9 x 700 = 6,300
