What is Porcine Parvovirus Infection ?

A frequent and significant factor in infectious infertility is porcine parvovirus infection. PPV is a powerful virus that is common in pig populations all over the world and mutiplies regularly in the intestine of the pig without producing any clinical symptoms.

PPV:

  • One of the most typical causes of pigs having few litters is (three times more pigs are lost during pregnacy then after birth)
  • Sows who are infected typically don't show any sympotoms, but if they are pregnant, the virus can transmit through the placent to the unborn pigs

Effects

  • Fetal pigs will die and be absorbed if the infection occurs in the first month of pregnancy

  • Fetal pigs will die and be mummified from days 30-70 of pregnancy

  • The developing pigs may be able to fight off the illness after 70 days
