New Technology of the late 1800s

RAILROADS

The railroad open the way in the West, to provided new economic opportunities, increase the development of town and communities, and also to tied the country together.

RAILDROADS

TIME ZONES

Time zones, a novel concept in the 1800s, were created by railroad. They used for continental time zones created because of the problems of moving passengers and freight over the thousands of miles of rail line that covered North America by the 1880s

TIME ZONES

RAILROAD AIRBRAKES

The straight or direct air brake, used air hoses to connect the cars. They were to avoid the risk and to permit trains to travel at higher speed.

TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD

The first continuous railroad line across the United States. Its function was to transport western food crops and raw materials to East Coast markets and manufactured goods from East Coast cities to the West Coast.

COMMUNICATONS

COMMUNICATIONS

Communications in the late 1800s were restricted. The only way to comunicate was by face-to-face contact, correspondence, and newspapers. But then around 1830s and 1870s the communication became one of the greatest development in the history.

TELEGRAPH

The telegraph worked by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations. It was a very important development of 1830s and 1840s. The telegraph allowed instant communication over vast distances for the first time in human history.

TELEFGRAPH

TELEPHONE

Alexander Graham Bell discovered the principal concept of the telephone. The telephone became very important, it was able to revolutionized communication by allowing conversations to take place between individuals at different locations.

TELEPHONE

ELECTRICITY

Alessandro Volta announced his invention of a battery. And in late 1800s, little by little people gained control over light in homes and offices, independent of the time of day. And the electric light brought networks of wires into homes and offices.

PHONOGRAPH

invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. It was the first device to be able to reproduce the recorded sound. Because of the phonograph people started hearing recorded music. Phonograph was the base for many inventions

PHONOGRAPH

LIGHTBULB

In 1800s the lightbulb worked by sending electrical current through two carbon electrodes separated by an air gap. The lightbulb changed the way we design buildings, increased the length of the average workday and jumpstarted new businesses.

ALTERNATING CURRENT

In 1886 the alternating current was used for the first time. The main advantage of alternating current is that, when transmitted over long distances, less energy is lost than with direct current. The porpose of the invention was to lower energy losses than direct current over distances more than a few metres.

WATER WHEEL

Water wheels were common sources of energy in America throughout the 1800s and even into the early 1900s.A water wheel was used to generate more power and allows higher production. Water wheels were used throughout Europe during the Middle Ages (approximately 500 to 1500).

MANUFACTURING OF STEEL

Henry Bessemer inventor and engineer who developed the first process for manufacturing steel in 1856. Steel helped fuel the accelerated growth of American cities, railroads, bridges, and factories.

BESSEMER PROCESS

The Bessemer Process was the first inexpensive industrial process that allowed for the mass production of steel. The process happen of making steel from pig iron by burning out carbon and other impurities by means of a blast of air forced through the molten metal. The Bessemer process greatly reduced the cost of producing steel.
