This painting has only 2 lines and it stills create something

Although the lines are messy you can see what the artist wants to show you

Real life images

Lines can appear also in real life. You may can't see them but they divide the things around you. For example, in this picture there are not literal lines, but if you focus you can see the many lines there are.

SPACE

The space is the are where the artwork is organised. The area that takes, outside and arround the work of art

SPACE

  • dense
  • open
  • simetrical
  • flat

the main object of a work of art take up positive space, the area around them is negative space

Google images

This paint is a great example of space because plays with the negative and positive

Real life images

This is a cinema. An empty room. Sometimes seeing empty places that are ususally crowded can be shocking are can create a weird sense of space in your mind

SHAPE

When the beginning of a line connects with its own end or intersects with another a shape is formed.

SHAPE

  • geometric: triangles, squares
  • organic: free form

In visual art shapes are flat, they are two dimensional

Google images

Picasso used a lot of shapes, both organic and geometric on his paintings,

Real life images

Buildings are a great exaple to see shapes in real life. This is the beautiful "palazzo della civilta italiana" and you can see a lot of geometric shapes.

COLOUR

The light that is reflects off of the object what we see as an object's colour

COLOUR

  • primary: blue, yellow and red
  • secondary: green, orange and violet
  • terciary: yellow-orange, green-blue...

A way to personalize an art of work is creating your own very unique colours

Google images

The rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon perfect to show beautiful colors

Real life images

Sunsets are another magical phenomenon capable of showing beautiful colors

VALUE

The valueis how light or dark a given color or hue is.

You can change value through:

VALUE

  • adding white
  • adding black

The different ways artists create lines and implied textures can also affect how we percieve value

Google images

To see and use a wide variation of grey values painting in white and black is a good way

Real life images

Editing a picture and turning it black and white let you see how many tones of grey a picture has

FORM

Form takes up space in either in real life or implied way

FORM

circle ----> spheres

square ---> cubes

triangles -> cones/pyramids
