The year was 1946 and everything was in shambles. All hopes were unclear. The 6 hopeful young men were not bothered by the political and economic situation of the time. With the high hopes, they established the Western Philippine Colleges. They wanted to rebuild Batangas and consequently to take part in the rebuilding of the nation. They wished to reach this dream rapidly. But to do this, they needed the cooperation of the people. They aspired that the people respond to their call of educating the youth who will be the key to a better Batangas and a better Philippines. The answer was the Western Philippine Colleges. The march towards a better Philippines began upon the establishment of the WPC.
Most of the people with the same mind would think that it would be ridiculous to establish a school during that time, i.e., post war. If the establishment of the school is for the purpose of putting up a great source of income, then the timing could be pretty bad since the country and almost all people were still recovering from the economic distress. But with the intention of the founders to help the Filipino people, and most particularly, the Tagalogs, no one was able to impede them so that, when Mr. Juan y Javier and Atty. Jesus Lorenzo A. Arguelles invited the other founders to join them in their desire of putting up an educational institution, the other four founders joined them bravely.
Challenged by all the odds, the six founders pulled out their resources, both financial and intellectual, to draw a plan for a school that will fulfill the dreams of the young Batanguenos. They realized that the war was not over yet. The Filipinos fought against the invading Japanese. They held that there is another battle to be fought with. They have to face the biggest challenge: how to rise up from rubble.
The road to success was yet dark and dreary. All the while, the founders knew that it would definitely be a great task to accomplish their goals. But the founders believed that success could be possible if the young people would be properly educated. The establishment of WPC was really a call to ameliorate, i.e., to step up and take a big leap toward success.
From the initial 48 students who were the first to respond to the call of the founders to march towards success, WPC took the first step of the tedious journey. The great passion of the founders in educating the youth and their faith to the Divine Providence became a great formula for the growth of an ordinary college towards greater strides, the WPC began to glide and to soar high until it becomes the University of Batangas today.
The administrators of the University of Batangas are trying to re-echo the head of the founders to the young Batanguenos that they should become the true hope of the country. The hope of the founders to rebuild the nation through education so that these youth would become the foundation of a better society was crooned in unison. Through the help of the teachers and staff who chanted with the founders, the call was heard by more and more people until many of them obtained success and became great contributors to the development of the society politically, physically, mentally, and even spritually.
The then WPC and the University of Batangas of today had produced many successful souls and the voices of those who had received a good education were echoing in many parts of the world. A great number of the products of the university had voices heard in the political arena, in academic communities, in the business world, and in any other professions and their contributions are something that the University of Batangas can really be proud of.
The founders tried their best to create a community within WPC. They taught the students to work hand in hand in order to achieve their goal of becoming of better service to the country. The students were taught to always carry within themselves the name of their alma mater. They were envisaged to make the name of their alma mater known through their works and attitudes.
The founders pictured WPC students as passionate young individuals whose desire to rise ad excel in their crafts and professions can be manifested by the way they live their life and serve the country as a person, as a man of God, and as a law-abiding citizens. They committed themselves to form students who are nationalistic and patriotic whose love for their country would not be undervalued.
