Famous Sculptures

TERRACOTTA WARRIORS (LATE 3RD CENTURY BC E)

Working in three dimensions, sculptors throughout history have shaped marble, bronze, wood, and other materials into incredible forms. And from our earliest times, sculpture has been an important way to understand culture and society, from portrait busts of great leaders.

Famous sculptures made by early-discovered clay

The terracotta warriors are a collection of statues in Xi'an. Counted among the figures are 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots, and 670 horses. The figures are an example of funeral art, used to "guide emperors into the afterlife." It is under a mound about the size of a football ditch, making it an incredibly large tomb. Around the mound is an imperial park

The Chinese were the first to introduce high temperature kilns capable of reaching up to 1350 degrees, and, around 600 CE, developed porcelain from kaolin clay.

Stone Age men made a discovery and invented pottery. It was noticed that clay left out in the sun dried and became hard but, was brittle, and broke easily. When these fires were made on top of ground that contained clay, the ground around the fire changed and became stronger.

How clay was discovered

Prehistoric humans discovered the useful properties of clay. Some of the earliest pottery shards recovered are from central Honshu, Japan. They are associated with the culture, and recovered deposits have been dated to around 14,000 BC.

People first began to fire clay in China and Japan about 14000 BC. Probably they started by lining baskets with clay so they would hold water better, and then they started leaving off the basket and just making clay containers. They may have used these early clay pots to ferment fish.

Additional Facts

Closing

It's very clear that clay has changed throughout the years, ages, even. And that our ancestors used clay for many basic needs, like fermenting fish, or holding water in case of emergency. Today we use clay to make pots, plates, and bricks. So next time you use modeling clay, remember that it has a very, very long history.
