Chapter 19

Hester introduces Pearl to Dimmesdale without telling her that he is her father. However, before Pearl approaches them, she orders Hester to put the scarlet A back on her chest. Hester becomes her "sad-self" again when she does this. When Pearl finally goes to them, she embraces her mother and kisses the scarlet letter. Hester then tells Pearl to embrace Dimmesdale, and she does. But when she asks if he is going to leave with them into town and he refuses, she tries to wash the kiss off of her mouth.

Scene

Hester

Before this chapter, Hester removes the scarlet letter off her chest, symbolizing that her plans to leave to Europe would be her freedom from her sin and Puritan Massachusetts. But when Pearl forces her to put the letter back on, she becomes gloomy. She loves the fact that she is going to Europe with Dimmesdale and Pearl, but did not like the fact that Pearl would only address her if she has the letter on her, since she became sad when she had to.

Dimmesdale

Dimmesdale in this scene becomes fearful about his daughter. He says that he fears that Pearl's and his resemblance would give away his secret about him being her father. His fears are brought to an end when Hester reassures him that Pearl will accept him as long as he does not induce strong emotions towards her.

Pearl

In Chapter 19, Pearl is full on emotion. We can identify this becuase she stomps her feet, shierks, and busrt into a fit of passion. Pearl represents a symbol of the passion shared between her two parents as well as serves, as a reminder of that act of sin between hester and dimmesdale (having a child out of wedlock & having an affair). Although pearl is no inhertantly evil she does bring her mom much sadness as well as create turmoil between dimmesdale and hester because it causes the to keep many sercets from eachother.
