Recovery

Result Of The

Investigation

Length: 4 years

Costs: 39 million dollar

4000 people were involved in the recovery of the plane

Leading: Transportation Safety Board of Canada

Others: American and Swiss flight security

Several thousands of parts had to be recovered, most of them from the ocean floor (55m)

126,5 tons (98% of the plane) could be recovered in 15 months

Both of the data recorders could be recovered

Air Accident

Investigation

Result Of The

Investigation

Result Of The Investigation

27th March 2003 the TSB (Transportation Safety Board of Canada) published the final report of the investigation

A broken isolation of a copper cable caused a short circuit behind the cockpit fairing

The short circuit caused insulating material to burn

The fire could expand unnoticed in the cable area

Result Of The Investigation

The air flow from the air conditioning sucked the fire away from the cockpit

Pilots turned the air conditioning off

the air flow disappeared and the flames could expand into the cockpit

The autopilot failed first

more and more other instruments failed and finally also the steering

The whole cockpit was on fire
