Start of the Civil War
Drought
The Somalian Civil war started with a series of droughts in the 1980's which are still a problem to this day
Start of the Civil War
Due to the lack of resources and the harsh treatment by the military Junta multiple resistence groups formed in the late 80's such as the SSDF in the northeast or the SNM in the northwest. This was until the Somali Democratic Republic was overthrown in 91' kicking off the war
From 1991 - 1998 the Un tired to stop the conflict with peacekeepers but failed miserably. The fighting caused the government to collapse splitting the country in two regions. The north and the south. The TNG was formed in 2000 and fighting is still going on to this day.
Since the 90’s hundreds of thousands of refugees have escaped Somalia due to political instability and civil war
There are over 836,300 refugees today.
33,600 refugees seeking asylum.
3 Million people displaced across Somalia.
In Kenya, Somalian immigrants attract Al-Shabaab which cause mass shootings within kenya. Rampant sexual violence spreads to other countries. Also Covid-19 has spread in neighboring countries with a greater speed due to lack of medical supplies in somalia and the amount of immigrants.
It has prevented Somalia from imporving there health and living standards. They acquired zero food aid due to the warlords. It has increased the mortality rate of children from 50 per 1000 children to 134 per 1000 children. Death and disease has been rampant all over somalia due to this civil war.
Death Rates in Somalia
Somali Bantu was an ethnic minority in Somalia. Muhidin Libah was part of this ethnic minoriy. His descendants were slaves and still felt there discrimination centuries later. This was heightened at the start of the somalian civil war which was fuelled by racism. So he crossed the border to the Dabaab refugee camp. Life in the camp was hot and sandy. The one goodness that came out of it was the school which the UN set up. Libah was finally able to get an education. Using this education he moved to Lewiston, Maine. He made a living here plnting crops. All his crops are organic and are grown in tradional ways. Muhidin Libah was definetly affected severly by the Somalian Civil war, however, due to perseverance he definely doesn't show his suffering.
Hamdia was born en route to a refugee camp. At the refugee camp there was no hospital, no medication, nothing. There was only plastic tents. They did not have a father because he had to stay to take care of his grandmother. All they had to there name was a milk carton full of water and cookies. That was all there provisions they had to survive on. In 2005, they were able to secure a trip to the United States. Unicef rehydrated and made sure they were given a proper diet with a lot of nutrition. They almost did not make it to the us because of identity theft. However, due to the UN they were able to secure a flight. Hamdia became a model in the US and even a pageant winner. Her ordeals molded her into the succesful women she has become.
The circumstances of exit west and Somalia inciting the mass immigration are present in both scenarios. Each crisis involves an unstable government being toppled by a military coup that caused and unsafe, unstable, and dangerous country.
"...Helicoptors filled the sky like birds startled by gunshots, or by the blow of an ace at the base of their tree... Saeed watched them with his parents from their balcony. Nadia watched them from her rooftop, alone."
Saeed and Nadia witness the start of a coup in their country brought on the crisis they spent the entire story escaping
"It seemed the militants had changed strategy, and grown in confidence, and instead of melerly detonating a bomb over here or orchestrating a shooting there, they began taking over and holding territory throughout the city."
Like the Somalian Refugee crisis the fighting in Saeed & Nadia's home country grew far worse.
"[The Smuggler] said to Saeed, "you go first" but Saeed, who had until then thought he would go first, to make sure it was safe for Nadia to follow, now changed his mind, thinking it possibly more dangerousfor her to remain behind while he went through,"
Immigration in Somalia was very dangerous and only took you one country over or across the sea from Somalia like Saeed and Nadia do in Exit West.
