IGel Use in EMS

Created by Paige Lytle

What is an IGel and why is it used?

An IGel is an easy to use supraglottic airway device that can be used in not only EMS but also emergency departments and even operation rooms all over the world.

What is an IGel ?

What was used before and why did we switch?

What did we use before?

Before the use of IGel devices, most commonly endotracheal intubation was used. The problem with endotracheal intubation is that more often than not, it’s not an easy task to preform and takes a moderate amount of training to learn how to do it. With all of the features of the IGel, which we will explore shortly, insertion of this device is quick and easy!

- “Moving to the IGel device is an evidence-based best practice for our organization.”

“The IGel device has been proven in practice in the United Kingdom for the last decade and in Canada and United States over the last few years. Moving to the IGel device is an evidence-based best practice for our organization. It’s safer, quicker, easier, and available for a greater age range of patients. This change benefits our patients, employees, and organization and was an easy decision to make”
