History 12
- Pearl Harbor took place in the Pacific Theatre.
-The battle code name for Pearl Harbor was called "Operation Ai," planned as "Z."
- The attack on Pearl Harbor took place on the U.S naval base in Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu, Sunday morning on December 7th, 1941.
- The forces included the Japanese Navy Air Service attacking the United States Naval base in Pearl Harbor. It was a sneak attack on the US who was a neutral country at the time.
- The tension between the Japanese and the US had already been growing for at least a decade prior to the Pearl harbor attack. An objective was that attacking Pearl Harbor meant the Japanese controlled the Pacific, showing they are powerful. Another goal was to destroy the American army/units, preventing the US from interfering or defeating Japanese conquest. Another objective was to prevent the US from further expanding in the Pacific, as they already expanded in Pearl Harbor in 1939. It was to ultimately weaken the American Fleet.
- The main strategies was firstly, how Pearl Harbor was a sneak attack. The U.S had not planned for this attack, leaving them unprepared and in a very vulnerable position. The next most important strategy was the use of air crafts. They sent out 353 Imperial Japanese air crafts with fighters, along with dive and torpedo bombers, launched from six aircraft carriers. The Japanese successfully bombed and damaged many U.S Navy ships, and even sunk four of them.
- After a long 2 hours of bombing Pearl Harbor, the American casualties were more than 3,400, with more than 2,300 deaths. There was more than 18 ships sunk or damaged. One of the most significant results of the attack on Pearl Harbor was the entrance of the United States into World War II. It also resulted in a huge tactical victory for Japan.
- Pearl Harbor is significant because it is the event that brought the U.S into WWII which ultimately changed the outcome of WWII, because before they chose to remain "neutral" for the war. It was a symbol of America's ambition, and survival. The American mindset had then changed completely, having a new outlook on the war.
- The D-Day Invasions took place in the European Theatre.
- The battle code name for the D-Day invasions was called "Operation Overload."
- The D-Day invasions took place on five beaches in Normandy, France, on Tuesday, June 6th, 1944.
- The Forces included Canadian, British, and American troops invading German Troops. There was 6,939 ships and landing vessels, 2,395 aircraft and 867 gliders that delivered airborne troops.
- The attack was spread across 5 beaches, Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha on the coast of Calvados and Utah. The main objective given to all allied soldiers was to push/drive the German Military back. The allies sought out full victory in Europe. Another goal was to establish a strong counterattack for the reinforcements to come in the following days.
- The Allies strategy was to flood the beaches with both aircraft's and naval ships, heavily bombing German troops, destroying key areas to prevent German reinforcements and retreat. It was a strategic, surprise ambush on the German forces.
The Allies had won, and it was an important victory. Not all the objectives had been achieved, but the airborne troops had secured the flanks as planned, and the landings were quite successful as well. The allies had prepared themselves for 40,000 casualties, but were left with only 10,000. It was estimated that German forces had around 10,000 casualties as well.
- The D-Day Invasions was a significant turning point in history because of the role it played in World War II. It changed the course of control that Nazi Germany had previously had. And less than a year after the D-Day invasions, Germany had officially surrendered to the Allies, do in part to the victory of the attack.
