In 1864 the University was named after Rev. Thomas Hopkin Gallaudet.
In 1856 a poster master general named Amos Kendall donated two acres of his estates in North Washington, D.C. to establish a school and housing for 12 deaf and six blind students.
Gallaudet University was established on April 8, 1864.
Gallaudet University was first called National Deaf- Mute College. In 1954 is when National Deaf-Mute College was changed to Gallaudet University.
The major event that started in 1988 at Gallaudet University was Deaf President Now.
The result of Deaf President Now was it brought awareness of deaf issue for the hearing world and paved new employment opportunities for those what are deaf. Also after two years of protest, the Americans passed Disabilities Act.
An interesting fact is that Gallaudet University is the only one to have a program and services specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing college students.
