The Nervous System

Eunice Colin

Definition

It is the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. It sends messages back and forth between the brain and the body. The nervous system can be sectioned into 2 main systems, the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System.

What is it?

What it is

The Central Nervous System is in charge of receiving, processing, and responding to sensory information. It inlcudes the Brain and Spinal Cord.

Central Nervous System

The Brain

What is it?

The brain is an organ that is at the center of the Nervous System. It is located in the head, inside our skull. The brain controls the sensory, integrative, and motor functions of our body. Different areas of the brain control different things.

The Spinal Cord

What is it?

The spinal cord is the extension of the central nervous system in the form of a long tube that extends from the neck to the lower back. It is in charge of sending signals from the brain to the body and vice versa. The signals help people feel sensations and allow them to move their body.

What is it?

It is a network of nerves that run through the head, neck, and body. It is involved in transmitting sensory and motor information to and from the central nervous system. It contains 2 other systems, the Autonomic Nervous System and the Somatic Nervous System.

Peripheral Nervous System

Autonomic Nervous System

What is it?

The Autonomic Nervous System regulates the internal organs to prepare the body for action.

There is 2 main branches of the Autonomic Nervous System, Parasympathetic Nervous System and Sympathetic Nervous System.

Sympathetic Nervous System is responsible for stimulating the fight or flight response.

Parasympathetic Nervous System is responsible for regulating the body at rest.

Somatic Nervous System

What is it?

The Somatic Nervous System connects the Central Nervous System with the body's muscles and skin. It controls voluntary movements, reflexes, and helps us process the senses of touch, taste, sound, and smell.
