THE 1800’S – BAIT AREESH: OLD DUBAI HOMES MADE OF PALM FRONDS

The principle of remaining cool served as the foundation for the construction of the older homes in Dubai and the rest of the UAE. The majority of the Bedouin nomad population spent the winter months in tents constructed of animal hides, usually adjacent to areas where their camels could also graze. But when summer came, they would build huts out of palm fronds to protect them from the heat. They were the perfect airy dwellings for the summer months and were known as Bait Areesh (Areesh house) or Barasti

BAIT AREESH

These Bedouin homes were frequently constructed on higher ground to allow more wind to travel through them. The wooden frames of a Barasti or Areesh home were square or rectangular in design and constructed from mangrove poles, split palm trunks, or any other suitable wood. The whole fronds of the palm that makes up the Areesh were utilized as thatching for the roof, while the stripped fronds were used to build screens. These thatched roofs were frequently lightly irrigated in hot weather to reduce indoor temperatures.

WIND TOWERS

WIND TOWER

In the past, these towers were used to control the wind so that air could be circulated within homes to cool them. The traditional desert homes in the UAE would occasionally have water sprinkled at the base of the tower to lower the temperature within.

The Barjeel was open on all four sides and often stood five meters above the ceiling. Through vertical shafts, it would capture and direct a cooler air into the space below. The ideal method for cooling historic desert homes was created by warm air rising naturally and exiting by the same tower.

Skyscrapers

Sky Scraper

A tall, continually inhabited building with several stories is referred to as a skyscraper. There is currently no agreed-upon definition for skyscrapers, however contemporary sources often stipulate that they must be at least 100 meters (330 feet) or 150 meters (490 feet) tall. Skyscrapers are extremely tall high-rise structures. When these kinds of structures initially started to be built in the 1880s, the term historically first applied to structures of between 10 and 20 stories. Offices, hotels, homes, and retail establishments can all be found in skyscrapers.
