My Literacy Road Map

By: Ariel Vargas

My mom would read books to me and my baby brother.

Youth: 5-8 years old

Reading Memory: My mom used to read “Love you Forever” to me and my newborn baby brother. We would sit together on the floor or on her bed and she would read the book and we would sing the rhyme together.

My mom bought me my first diary/journal to keep

4th grade

Writing Memory : My mom bought me my first diary to keep. She gave me a pink diary with a lock and key on it. She told me to save the key in a special place and that I should write down how I feel and any stories I wanted to come up with.

My dad takes me to get my first library card!

5th grade

Reading Memory : My dad took me to get my first library card! He told me that we were going driving to the library. When we got there he told me that I was able to read all of the books that were on the shelves and he took me to check out my first few books. I borrowed “Maniac Magee” and “The Witches”. I read both books so fast I couldn’t wait to go back!

My first checked out books!

I was also able to see the movie that came out from 1990 and the remake in 2020!

I won my first writing contest!

What I did to my paper

Writing Memory : In 10th grade I had the BEST english teacher! She helped us to keep a writers journal in school. It was an interactive notebook that we would write notes in and decorate however we wanted. A lot of our stories and grammar practice workshops would go in there. She was the one teacher that allowed me to expand on my love for creative writing. She set up a school fiction writing contest and it was the most eager I was to turn in a paper. I went so far as to burning my paper, to match the storyline of what happened.

10th grade as a writer

My mom bought me my first book series!

10th grade as a reader

Reading Memory : This was where I rekindled my love for reading. Not that I left it, because I was still a huge reader. But this is when I first realized and learned about “series”! My mom took me to Barnes and Noble to go our usual book browsing (that always ended up in the purchase of a few books for my brother and myself) and I found “Twilight”. After reading the first and seeing that there were more, my mom bought me the ENTIRE series! I locked myself away in my room and read the entire series in about a week. I couldn’t put them down. That’s also when I realized I was a hopeless romantic and love books about love.

The Series I fell in love with

Of course my Fiance bought me the new book!

As soon as I heard that Meyer's was releasing Midnight Sun my fiance went online and pre-ordered for me! Thus my shameless twilight obsession contunued to feed my reading (especially through quarantine!)

The story continues

Movie Release Night

My mom was the one who bought me all the books, so naturally after I read all the books at least twice, she took me to see two of the films for their midnight release. It was the coolest experience to watch them and talk to her about how the books and movies were drastically different!

Midnight Showing!

Getting back into writing.

Writing Memory : For a long time I was not writing creatively as much as I used to. My classes at Lehman with certain professors allowe me to re-visit writing. I took a few classes with Professor Castillo-Planas and with Professor Peters. They allowed me to tap into my writing once again and made me feel safe sharing in their classrooms about what I was creating. I even wrote a poem that I am super proud of for the funeral of my fiance's grandfather that meant a lot to the family. This made me feel special as they had it printed and framed.
