A drug is a substance that affects the way the body functions. If a drug is classified as ‘illegal’, this means that it is forbidden by law. Different illegal drugs have different effects on people and these effects are influenced by many factors. This makes them unpredictable and dangerous, especially for young people.
A legal drug or intoxicants are drugs which are not prohibited by the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Most people consume legal drugs for medical purposes.
Types of legal drugs are caffeine, alcohol and nicotine
There are many illegal drugs being used and abused all over the world, but these are found to be the top 5 most used illegal drugs
Ecstasy is considered a party or rave drug, and many high-schoolers and young party goers use it. Its psychoactive effects include enhanced sensory perception and reduced inhibition. Most people who use this drug take it as a pill and dissolve it in water, but others snort or inject it.
Marijuana is one of the most commonly abused substances. Its main psychoactive ingredient, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), causes temporary euphoria followed by fatigue, slow reaction time, and intense hunger. It can act as a gateway drug to other harmful, illegal substances.
Cocaine
Cocaine is a potent, addictive stimulant derived from the leaves of the South American coca plant. This drug usually comes as a powder. Generally, people who use this drug snort, smoke, or inject it. Nicknames include:
Hallucinogens are a group of drugs that impact a person’s awareness levels. They’re split into two categories: classic hallucinogens and dissociative drugs. They cause hallucinations, which are sensations and images that seem real, but are not. Two of the most common hallucinogens are LSD (D-lysergic acid diethylamide) and PCP (Phencyclidine).
Crack is the more pure, powerful form of cocaine, and it typically comes in crystals or solid blocks. Users of crack cocaine generally smoke it so that it reaches the brain in seconds, resulting in a short-lived—yet intense—high. Some people inject it.
Effects of crack cocaine include euphoria, supreme confidence, loss of appetite, insomnia, alertness, increased energy, a craving for more cocaine, and potential paranoia (ending after use). Its initial effect is to release a large amount of dopamine, a brain chemical inducing feelings of euphoria.
Different drugs can have different effects. Some effects of drugs include health consequences that are long-lasting and permanent. They can even continue after a person has stopped taking the substance.
Drug abuse affects many different parts of the body, here I am looking at three different areas that are heavily effected by illegal drugs
Substance use disorders can lead to multiple behavioral problems, both in the short and longterm, which can include;
1. PARANOIA
2. AGGRESSIVENESS
3. HALLUCINATIONS
4. ADDICTION
5. IMPAIRED JUDGMENT
6. IMPULSIVENESS
7. LOSS OF SELF-CONTROL.
These effects of drug abuse have serious consequences, like missed work, punishable offenses, accidents and injuries. In fact, alcohol and drugs are partly to blame in an estimated 80 percent of offenses leading to jail time in the U.S.
All drugs target an area of the brain called the reward circuit, this area of the brain affects mood and instinct. This causes a large amount of dopamine (a brain chemical that helps regulate emotion and pleasure) to flood the brain. This flood is what causes a 'high'.
Although initial drug use may be voluntary, drugs can alter brain chemistry. This can actually change how the brain performs and interfere with a person’s ability to make choices. It can lead to intense cravings and compulsive drug use.
The most severe health consequences of drug abuse is death. In the past 12 months, 212,000 people aged 12 or older have used heroin for the first time. Every day, more than 90 Americans die after overdosing on opioids.
Other drugs affects on health incude:
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices and as like the effects on the body, each drug can cause different mental heath issues here i will be looking at the drugs i mentioned earlier in 'Types'.
notes many drugs share the same effects
