Down Syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, has symptoms that may include a distinct facial appearance, intellectual disability, some developmental delays. There is no treatment for it, no surgery or medicine can cure it.
In the United States, about 1 in every 700 babies are born with Down syndrome. The risk of having a child with down syndrome increases with the mother’s age. The risk is about 1 in 1,250 for a woman who conceives at age 25. It increases to about 1 in 100 for a woman who conceives at age 40.
More males are born with down syndrome then girls.
Unfortunately, Down Syndrome can not be cured,
Ginger is an assistive technology that helps individuals with D.S. with their writing. Solo 6 Literacy Suite is another assistive technology that helps students with down syndrome, it has the speech to text feature. Also things like a simple smartphone, see and learn speech, and echo smartpen.
These technologies are all tailored to helping with their education since that's where people with D.S. lack the most.
Most down syndrome cases aren’t inherited, it’s random events.
Down Syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder. Its a chromosome mutation.
The parents could have any genotype, down syndrome isn’t something that can be passed on. It’s a random type of disease.
The probability of down syndrome being passed on from parent to child is 1 in 100.
This is a possiblity pedigree chart, starting with my husband and I ending with our grandchildren. As you can see, Down Syndrome is a random occurance.
Our daily routine would be longer since it takes kids with down syndrome longer to get ready, so a set routine would have to be made
I think our estimated medical cost would be somewhere around $4,209.
It would have somewhat of an emotional impact on me, my spouse, and the rest of my family. But, it is up to use to make sure our child feels 100% normal and keep them happy. We wouldn’t want our own child to feel abnormal in it’s own family.
We would need to move closer towards downtown Atlanta to be near treatment and support groups for our child. Though, it’s a possibility for them to go to normal school, it would be ideal to be near support in case it’s needed. Living in Fayetteville would not be the most beneficial.
Like I said earlier, I wouldn’t treat my child any different. I would treat them the exact same, because I wouldn’t want to be treated different because of a disability I was born with.
Some local treatment centers are the Adult Disability Medical Healthcare (770-952-1032) which is located in Marietta, GA, and it serves from ages 12 to adulthood. Another local treatment center is the Emory University Down Syndrome Clinic (404-778-1363) which is located in Atlanta, Ga and serves from birth to 18+.
Some local support groups are the National Down Syndrome Society and the Uno Mas! Forum, which is an online forum dedicated to supporting caregivers of children with Down syndrome.
One national foundation that provides grants or other support is the Global Down syndrome Foundation which is a nonprofit that's dedicated to improving the lives of people with Down Syndrome.
Most kids with Down syndrome attend normal school, but are put into special classes. Their classes have special modifications and needs that adhere to each individual.
