Dramatic and dark, the beginning of Kubo's story is vauge and unusual...
A woman, long haired and weary, is in a large storm in the ocean, holding a shamisen in her arms as waves threaten to unngulf her and her small boat...
She looks up at a moutainous wave looms in front of her. She lifts her thin arm, holding a pick, and strums the strings on her shamisen, splitting the wave and allowing her passage.
the beginning of Kubo
As she began to pass through the newfound passage she turned her head to see another, larger wave came down to collapse onto her. Under the water her head smacked against a rock, making her lose consciousness.
A few moments later the sound of a baby crying woke the woman up, her struggling to crawl to her baby. As she reached her baby, it's revealed it has only one eye, stolen by his grandfather. Then the narrator says this child's name is Kubo.
Kubo, now 10 years old, lives in a cave, and one day, goes downw to the village and begins telling a stroy with moving oragami. One old woman tells him of a festival to honor the dead. He participates in this and makes his own alter...
After buildling an alter for his father, Kubo prays to it with no answer from his father. He doesn't realize that it's getting dark though and he is attacked by the sisters, running away from them and headed towards the cave where he lived. Just reaching the mountains base, he trips, falling before the sisters. Then, before the sisters could take his other eye, his mother came out of nowhere...
She strung the strings on the shamisen which caused the sisters to be thrown back a bit. Kubo's mother then smacks the robe Kubo is wearing and sends him off somewhere else, keeping the sisters at bay.
Kubo wakes up in a blizzard, a monkey standing over him repeating his name. She tells Kubo tht they must leave before the sisters return and that they should find shelter. They then find a whale carcass which they make as a shelter...
While in the smelly whale carcass Kubo makes it obvious he has many questions. Monkey acknowledges this and allows him only three. Kubo gets answers for all three, but then has another important question. Kubo asks poitely to ask another question, which Monkey answers plainly.
After this, Kubo and Monkey meet Beetle, who Monkey is not impressed with. Eventually though they become a trio, traveling together. Soon enough, they enter some dangerous territory.
While traveling the trio end up falling into a huge chamber filled with many old bones and a giant, shining skeleton hand with the Sword Unbreakable inside of it. Beetle takes the Sword Unbreakable out of the hand, which causes the giant bones to form a giant skeleton body. The trio then have a long battle with the giant skeleton before finding the real Sword Unbreakable inside the Skeleton's head.
Eventually the trio escape the chamber coming across long lake. Kubo makes a boat out of fallen leaves, the trio climbing onto it and sailing for a while. After a little while Monkey suggests they should head for shore before beetle points out the Breastplate Impenetrable, jumping into the water after Kubo trys to warn him of the Garden of Eyes.
Soon beetle jumps into the water, ignoring Kubo's warning and going down for the Breastplate Impenetrable. After a long while Kubo jumps in after him, worried that he may have died. Beetle then surfaces, finding out that Kubo has jumped in and goes back down to save him. Meanwhile, Monkey ends up having a long battle with one of the sisters.
While Monkey fought against the sister, Kubo, down in the depths of the water, finds the shining Breastplate Impenetrable. Kubo then victoriously slips on the breasplate, only to find he's been entranced by the Garden of Eyes. He was pulled downward, heading towards a mouth filled with razor sharp teeth.
He inched closer and closer as he viewed images placed in his head by the eyes... He saw images of Monkey and his mother, finding out that they are one. Soon, just before being swallowed by the tooth filled chasm beneath him, an arrow shot through the eye keeping Kubo in the trance. A few more eyes were shot through before Beetle came into view. In the last few instances Kubo opens his mouth, releasing the air he needed...
Beetle surfaces with Kubo in his arms, Monkey floating on a peice of now broken down ship. Kubo, unconscious wasn't breathing, Monkey and Beetle leaning over him worriedly. Soon enough, Kubo coughs out some water and the boat begins to reform...
Kubo soon has a dream of where the last piece of armor, Helmet Invulnerable, is located. The trio eventually make it to the place where Kubo thought it was and eventually the last sister appears, Monkey and Beetle fighting her off, Kubo helping as well.
After fighting fiercely Monkey and Beetle are killed by the sister. Kubo takes revenge by defeating her and heads to the place where the helmet invulnerable was located. At his home town.
He then begins an epic battle with his grandfather...
Soon Kubo has a final battle with his grandfather, Kubo made strings on his shamisen made out of his mothers hair and two other things. By the river where the lanterns from before are floating his fights his grandfather. He strums the strings and all the lanterns light up...
Then from the lanterns spirits arrose and stood next to Kubo. In the next few moments the people from the town come out from hiding and stand beside Kubo and the spirits. The spirits then began emmitting a bright blue light which protects them.
Kubo ends up defeating his grandfather, causing his granfather to lose memory of who he is or what happened. His grandfather then becoming kind to Kubo.
Kubo is at the cemetary and assembles a new alter for his parents. He thanks his mother and father for their wisdom, kindness, and love on the journey.
Kubo says, "No. It's in my memory. The most powerful kind of magic is there." after realizing that the reason his granfather wanted his other eye was so he can't look into another's eyes and see their soul and love.
Kubo, now a wizer person, is no longer in danger of his grandfather. Now, he will not be bling to the kindness, warmth, love and sould of others. He can live freely, no longer having to afraid of the night and the darkness it embelishes.
