TIMELINE

Schizophrenia

1814

The creation of mental hospitals and state-run mental facilities

In the early stages, mental hospitals were not good at all. They were very bad conditions and similar to that of prisons. Physical restraints were used, and the hospitals were not well kept. This gets and F because the conditions were horrible and I think it would hardly constitute treatment.

1814

Hydrotherapy

There were two main methods: of hydrotherapy: douche (shower), a constant torrent of water could either cool the heat of madness or rouse the melancholic; and balneum (bath), which were meant to calm nerves. Common side effects were headaches, aches and pain, sleep problem, nausa, chills. I would give this a F because it was pure torture.

1880

Milieu

Is a safe structured group treatment method for treatement. Involved everyday method activities and a conditioned enviroment to help with people with interaction in community setting. Helped reduce violent behavior in mental health. Promote postive change. Give it a grade of A

1900

This is a surgery in which you sever the connections between the frontal lobes and other parts of the brain. They do not exist anymore, but they were not just used for schizophrenia. People who were gay, commited crimes, or had intellectual disabiliteis were given lobotamy's too. It was found that this did not treat the mental issue, rather resulted in changes in apathy, distractability, lack of initiative, and changes in personality. Some of the more severe difficulties were seizures, dementia, death, among others. All in all, they get an F as it was rarely affective.

Lobotamy

1930

First gen

Primarly working to reduce dopamine. They also have effects on the norepinephrine and acetylcholine. Extrapyramidal and Anticholinergic are common symoptoms of side effects. I would give this an A because they started to make progress in treatment.

1950

1950

The rise of asylums

These were often palatial buildings, designed by prestigious architects, with vast landscaped grounds and impressive vistas. They were symbols of civic pride, just as museums and universities are today, and some became fixtures on the tourist trail. They were intended to be places of refuge and safety for these people, but they were not found to be. I would give it a C because it had good intentions, but the execution was not very good.

1960

Hallucination Reinterpretation & Acceptance Therapy

This seeked to help people understand their symptoms better and manage their disorder. It allowed patients to see the hallucinations differently and start to accept them. I give this an B because it was a lot better than previous decisions and was a therapy that proved to be very helpful for those that needed it.

1960

1996

Community Care/Community Treatment

Community treatment was similar to mental hospitals but cared much more for their patients. It aimed to reduce symptoms to allow these people to live more effectively. I couldn't find any downfalls of this so I would give it a B because it was good for the time period especially.

Second Generation Antipsychotics

generally have lower risk of extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia compared with first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs). First- and second-generation antipsychotic drugs are more comparable in their clinical efficacy, with the exception of clozapine, an SGA with unique efficacy in treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Give it an A

“Avatar” therapy for Auditory Hallucinations

This is a computer- based intervention. Therapists start a conversation with the patient about their hallucinations and put a visual representation to it. It is a type of CBT. They will have to have conversations with the visual representation and confront them. I would give this a D because it basically tortures the people suffering from this disorder.
