Week 5 Lesson 10

Bundling/regrouping Tens

REGROUPING TENS

Today we are going to look at another strategy that can help us break up difficult problems and make them easier to solve.

Mental Math

Strategies for number sentences

Let’s look at a problem:

There are 38 apples, 16 bananas, 24 peaches, and 12 pears in the fruit basket. How many pieces of fruit are in the basket?

Here we had to add 38, 16, 24, 12 together.

We can break these numbers up into number bonds.

So 38 can be 30 + 8

16 can be 10 + 6

24 can be 20 + 4

12 can be 10 + 2

REGROUPINg and Bundling

Strategies

You can see from the diagram that we can create two tens between 6+4 and 8+2

Which leaves us with 30 + 10 + 20 + 10 and also 10 + 10 from the ones we joined together.

So altogether

30 + 10 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 90

Ok, let’s look at another hard addition sentence:

31+ 23 + 19 + 47=

Let’s break them up

31 -> 30 + 1

23 -> 20 + 3

19 -> 10 + 9

47 -> 40 + 7

Let’s bundle up the ten’s!

9 + 1 = 10

3 + 7 = 10

30 + 20 + 10 + 40 = 100!

100 + 10 + 10 = 120!
