The Llano Uplift

What is Weathering?

Weathering is the breaking down of rock

What is Erosion?

Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition

Erosion is the movement of sediment from broken rock

What is Deposition?

Deposition is the dropping of sediment in a new place

The Llano Uplift is in the Edwards Plateau which is West-Central of Texas

Where is the Llano Uplift?

Whats the weather like in the Llano Uplift?

Climate

The Llano Uplift reaches a rainfall from 15-34 inches of rain a year. The climate is dry and the elevation being 850 feet above sea level. The annual high temperature is 81.3 degrees Fahrenheit and the annual low temperature is 52.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

Agents of Weathering and Erosion

The agents of weathering and erosion in the Llano Uplift is minor wind and water from the rainfall.

Hard rainfalls can break down the rocks which is an example of weathering, and the water from the rainfall flows down the rocks picking up small rocks as it goes, which is an example of erosion. Some formations are Plateau's and rock formations.

Evidence of Weathering and erosion that exsits in the area

The soil type in the Llano Uplift is sandy because of the large amount of weathering. Ranching is the agricultural industry because of the many water sources in the Llano Uplift and near it.

How has weathering, erosion, and deposition affected the Llano Uplift?

Some Plants and Animals in the Llano Uplift are:

Plants: Tobusch fishhook cactus, basin bellflower, and rock quillwork

Plants and Animals

Animals/Insects: Muskrats, Racoons, and Tarantulas

How are they affected by weathering, erosin, and deposition

The weathering can destroy homes by carving them in, or make their homes fall. Erosion can carry their homes away and Deposition can drop sediments on their homes, blocking the entrance and not letting air in.

What can we do to prevent Erosion?

To prevent it we can:

  • Plant grass and shrubs
  • Reduce watering
  • Avoid soil compaction

preventing erosion

Agencies that participate in the effort to conserve soil in this area

The Llano Uplift region has rough, grainy sands, produced from weathered granite

Some extra cool fun facts are:

  • The Llano Uplift is well known for its large, granite domes, such as Enchanted Rock. (a pink granite mountain located in the llano uplift)
  • The Llano Uplift is actaually a basin
  • The nearest watershed in the llano uplift is the llano river.
