The overall function of the blood motif is to symbolize the great death and murder that takes place throughout the play. It also symbolizes Macbeths downfall, and how by the end of the story he was convinced that blood was the solution to all problems. He became so obsessed with murder that it eventually caught up to him and ultimately lead to his death.
