Entertainment & Celebrity Culture

Bill and Melinda Gates got divorced as did Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott.

Divorce

Having money and being able to do anything with that money won't make/keep you happy.

Oprah Winfrey donated more than 40 million dollars to help women and children with health care and education.

Oprah

Oprah’s philanthropy to help women and children, particularly in third world countries is one example of how people with money can help make the world a better place.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Elon Musk makes an alternative school

Meryl Streep

Philanthropy is good and Meryl Streep and her husband have been quietly donating a considerable amount of their income (in addition to this example) for many years.

History

History

9/11

9/11

The attacks on 9/11 fundamentally changed the way security in America is done and more importantly changed the way Americans think about immigrants from the middle east. This event got us as a country involved in a war in the middle east and lead to countless laws and governmental actions of all types.

December 7, 1941

Pearl Harbor

“A day that will live in infamy” those words were spoken over the radio addressing America after the japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

The Cold War

Cold War

This is an extreme example of what happens when you fight fire with fire. The end of the cold war with the fall of the Berlin Wall can be used in economic arguments about communism/capitalism.

Vietnam War

Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was an offshoot of The Cold War when after France lost colonial control over Vietnam, the US sent troops over to stop the spread of communism in the country. This did not work out well for the Americans and is an example of why you should learn from the mistakes of others and not go out of your way to meddle in the business of others even if you think you're trying to help them.

Dropping Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Atomic Bombs

The United States dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a successful effort to win the war in the pacific. This arises the moral argument about the necessity of the second atomic bomb and it can be used as a parallel in writing.

Universal Truths

Universal Truths

Jar of Sand

Jar of Sand

If you think about your time as a jar and the things you need to do as rocks and the things you want to do as sand, you can create a thought experiment where you try to fit it all into the jar. Say you have a single day. If you start by doing all the things you want to do, the sand goes into the jar and densely fills up the bottom. Then when you go to do the things you need to do, the rocks leave lots of extra spaces and overflow. However, if you start with the rocks and then fill in the sand afterward, the sand will fit in the cracks and everything will fit in the jar.

Timberlake

What goes around comes around.

This relates to the golden rule “Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself” This can easily be used to refute opposing arguments in any of the essays.

It's about the journey, not the destination.

It's about the journey, not the destination.

In the past I have had plenty of prompts about new laws or something related to that that help to skip any processes and make the world more fast paced. This can be used in any argument related to that.

The Neighbors Yard

Just because something sounds or looks good in theory or on paper, once you get into it it may not be all it was cracked up to be. This idea can be used in plenty of the rebuttals to opposing arguments as well as concessions to your own.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

Money can't buy happiness but it can buy a Jet Ski and that's close enough

Money doesn't mean happiness.

Having money won't make you happy. You can't buy happiness, oftentimes it comes from the experiences you have and who you share those experiences with.

Government & Current Events

Government and Current Events

Black Lives Matter Movement

BLM

This movement shows how people can try to enact social change. You can use this as an example in an argument, especially in conjunction with Gandhi's movements in South Africa and India, and MLK’s movement in America in the 60’s.

Voter ID Laws

New laws arising after the large number of mail in ballots due to COVID in the last year are controversial because they attempt to make voting more difficult.

Voter ID Laws

Covid Vaccine Laws

COVID Vaccine

With vaccine’s for covid being free, and with many businesses hoping to stop the spread of covid in order to run at full strength, are laws requiring the vaccine going to come into play and if so how far will they go.

Gas Pipeline Cyber Attack

Gasline Cyber Attack

A recent cyber attack on a major gas pipeline up the east coast can be used as evidence to talk about the dangers of the internet.

Senators Reach Bipartisan Agreement on Highway Bill.

Highway Bill

This can be used as evidence in any argument about disagreements about two sides and how if the right compromise is made they can get good things done.

&

Experiences

Observations and Experiences

Grandmother Died

Grandmother

A year ago my grandmother passed away and she was a big part of my life, as she was someone who helped raise me. This taught me an important lesson about how to deal with loss.

My Parents got Divorced

Divorce

In the last year, my parents got divorced and this helped me to realize that when you’re going through something, it truly is helpful to have people around in your life that you can confide in.

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard Training

I became a lifeguard for this upcoming summer and as I wrote my college essay on, the training to become a lifeguard, because of the conditions it took place in, was very difficult and taught me a lot about perseverance.

Baseball

Baseball

Baseball is a game of failure and it is a huge part of my life. Playing baseball has taught me so much about what putting a lot of effort into something can yield and more importantly, it taught me how to lose, and how to recover from failure.

COVID 19

Global Pandemic

I lived through a global pandemic and got to see the world change and more likely than not, it will never be the same again.
