Civil War (1861-1864)

This was started by president, Abraham Lincoln. It was between the Northern adn Southern states who had opposing thoughts, opinions, and values regarding slavery.

Civil War Significance

This was beginning of a fight for freedom with Abraham Lincoln backing the slaves. He believed in their rights. He fought and granted their freedom as citizens and to be treated as one. It was a revolutionary break for the meantime.

Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves from the Confederate States. Helping African American's get ahead and do revolutionary movements for themself. Such as......

Accomplishments

African American's were also very active within this movement. This was to allow all males over 21 to vote. But, without having race involved. So now eligible African American males could vote as well.

Freedmen's Bureau Act

(1866)

Accomplishments

African American's were very active with their involvement for this movement. This was important to them because it provided food, shelter, clothing, etc for newly freed African Americans

Civil Rights Act (1866 and 1873)

Accomplishments

The purpose of this act was to equally protect all citizens. All must be treated equally and from this point on were unable to be denied based off of skin color or race. This finally allowed African Americans to be equal.

Importance of these Accomplishments

Overall , each of these movements that they stood for were important for their rights. Before they had no rights and were treated as objects. With these Acts, they fought for their freedom, rights, and defined citizenship for all
