Mineralocorticoid Deficiency

Melanie Hartley

Description/ Symptoms

In mineralocorticoid deficiency there is a decreased amount of the hormone aldosterone.

This causes dehydration, low blood pressure, low sodium levels, and high potassium levels.

How Aldosterone works

When there is a drop in blood pressure Aldosterone is activated. When you have too little Aldosterone, the correct amount can't be released so this will cause mineralocorticoids. When there is decreased blood flow to the kidneys an enzyme that triggers Aldosterone is released called Renin. That makes Aldosterone's target organ the kidneys.

The Nervous System

The Nervous System controls many fluctuations of blood flow by altering signals. This is tied to Aldosterone because the hormone can be triggered by blood flow to the kidneys. These two systems use blood pressure to interact with each other.
