-If the main leader makes a wrong decision it can be harder for people to object.

- Used by popes to extend their power

- They were legates (official representatives)

- They were curial officials

- Their jobs included electing the pope, acting as his principal counsellors, and helping the government of the Church.

- Bishop of the highest rank

- In charge of all the bishops and priests in a particular country or region

- Had authority over priests, monks, and deacons who were at the bottom of the church hierarchy (not counting believers)

- Prayed with other people

-Priests cared for the spiritual life of people.

- Separates himself from society and lives alone or in an community to devote himself full-time to religious life.

- Lived in monasteries

- Served as examples of the perfect Christian life.

- Were scholars who sometimes copied the books of the Bible by hand. (This was before the invention of the printing press.)

- Worked to support themselves by gardening and land management.

- Sometimes educated the sons of the nobles.

Deacon

Deacons

- Help the bishop look after the temporal needs of the Church.

- Include gathering fast offerings, helping to care for those in need, and helping to care for the meetinghouse and grounds.

- They can do some of the things a priest does but basically, they are a lower-ranked priest
