King's orders

The king's messenger sent a sealed box to be opened on the 1st night after landing.

John Smith was thrown in prison because of an argument on board.

Virginia at last

Remember the king's orders

When they arrived, they opened the box and it had instructions for the new colony. Seven names were inside, and those seven men were to lead the colony. John Smith was one of the men chosen.

JAMESTOWN

  • Colonists chose a swamp to build their fort and houses
  • They named their new colony Jamestown in honor of King James I

New Problems

Jamestown

  • Malaria- a sickness from mosquito bites
  • Hunger- many had not planted crops in the spring, so now they faced starvation

Indians

John Smith didn't give up. He left Jamestown to trade with the Indians.

The chief of many chiefs

John Smith was captured by Powhatan. He would decide if he lived or died. But his daughter Pocahontas saved him.

John Smith did these things to Jamestown....

1. made the walls of the fort stronger

2. encouraged the people to grow their own garden

3. dug a well for the fort

Other improvements

"Starving Time"

While Captain Smith was away, the people of Jamestown didn't have enough food for the winter. So many colonists starved to death, it was called the "Starving Time."

When John Smith was well, he returned. He explored New England and made a map.
