"People's Land"

The homeland where Eastern Crees settle is called is "Eeyou Istchee" meaning People's Land.

Location

The land is home to over 18,000 people.

The Cree Nations of traditional land 'Eeyou Istchee' is located mainly in Northern Quebec, which includes along the shores of James Bay and south-eastern Hudson Bay, as well as lakes and rivers that drain into them. It was not til later that the Crees establish themselves permanently in what is known as Eeyou Istchee and into reserves.

The total land area of Eeyou Istchee is 5,271 square kilometers but Grand Council of the Crees see the land as much as a larger territory and homeland as much as 450,000 square kilometers.

Defining themselves as a nation of hunters – Ndooheenou. The Cree have traditionally followed the seasons and animal migrations in order to obtain meat for food and animal hides, fur and bones for the making of tools and clothes. To this day, during the fall, many still go to their trap lines to hunt moose, caribou and bear, snare rabbit as well as trap beaver, muskrat, otter, marten, lynx, and fox. Some trappers return to the community for Christmas, but others remain in the bush all winter.

In the 1600's, it was then that Europeans came into the territory of Eeeyou Istchee. They made trades with the James Bay Cree people.

A party of Cree encountered the Europeans, which then sparked the beginning of the Hudson's Bay Company. As the Hudson's Bay expanded their company by making trading post, the Crees started settling at the many trading post.

Hydroelectricity

In the 1960s, the Quebec government announced three hydro projects: the LaGrande project, the Great Whale River project, and the Nottaway-Broadback-Rupert (NBR) project. The Crees were not consulted about this project so in response they establish the Grand Council of the Crees in the 1970's.

1970's - The disputes resulted in siging the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (1975)

1980's - Quebec proposed the Great Whale River project.

2002 - Crees and Quebec signed Paix des Braves.

Culture

The Crees traditional way of life is based on hunting, trapping, and fishing. They did not follow a religious traditional way of life. Before European contact, they were more driven and focused on surviving by hunting for food and hides for clothing and teepees, and gathering nuts.
