It was unique because they had a single minded focus purely on victory in war. To achieve this they didn't think twice about adopting a ruthless approach, which even involved abandoning weak five year old's in the jungle as they would be a burden rather then a strength to the army.
The Spartans won almost every war because of a few reasons:
1) The Spartans were well armored and the Persians were not used to fighting well armored opponents
2) Another reason the Spartans won almost every war was because of their bravery. They were ruthless warriors and one of their most sacred rules was that, "A Spartan cannot retreat, he will either win or die".
3) The Spartans had Athens on their side. Without Athens, Greece would have been easily conquered by the Persians. Here are a few reasons why:

Spartans were superior in their soldier training methods, choice of armor and weapons as compared to the Persians. However, Persians won when it came to battleground strategy, because they had an equal focus on education along with warfare.

This contributed to today's world because the training system of the Spartans was adopt by militaries of the modern world, but these militaries have changed the system a bit, like for example, they have removed that soldiers are encouraged to steal. Also, did you know that the Scots adopted the phalanx formation during the 1700s but they used pike's instead of spears.
