Paula Angel The ''Only'' Woman Ever Hung In New Mexico

presented by group one.

Her Early Life

Paula Pablita Angel. Not much is known about this poor woman. But we do know that she belonged to a prominent family in the Las Vegas Territory. Paula was made famous after she became the ''first and only'' woman to ever be hung in New Mexico. We do not know the exact day that Paula was born but we do know that she was born in 1842.

Paula's Early Life

Her Mans

Paula had many suitors but had rejected them all until she met Juan Miguel Martin he had a wife and five children. Paula and Juan had an affair but Paula was not aware that Juan was married or had kids. Juan had told Paula many times that he planned on marrying her. When Paula found out that Juan had been with many women and had a wife and children she was furious. On march 23rd, of 1861. It is reported that she lured him to a "final meeting" and confronted him. He told her that he had never actually loved her and that she was stupid for believing so. This pushed Paula over the edge and she stabbed him multiple times. Many report hearing a argument and hearing Juan cry out in pain shortly after. He was taken to the bar across the street and died shortly after.

Her Trial

Paula was arrested a day after the murder, and was on trial five days later. In the same day she was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. In addition the judge made Paula pay for all legal expenses, and her hanging. It is said that one of the sheriffs( sheriff Hererra) stated that "he was going to hang her till she was dead, dead, dead." He taunted her every day until she was hung. It is believed that Juan Miguels family bribed the judge, this is because in the 19th century women were rarely ever convicted of murder, and her crime should have been considered a crime of passion.

Her Death

Paula was hung on April 26th 1861 Paulas hanging was attended by many from all over the Las Vegas territory. A man only mentioned as Sheriff Herrera drove her in a wagon that also contained her coffin. Some say that the sheriff looked a little too eager when he tied the noose a round her neck.

Her Death

Introduction

When Sheriff Herrera was preparing to hang her he forgot to tie her hands. This resulted in her using her hands to hang on to the rope. The sheriff had to take her down and tie her hands. She was then hung again.

Her strange death

Introduction

Many people actually wanted to see Paula live. After the first attempt to hang her many protested and said that she was still hung and her sentence had been carried out. During the first attempt Sheriff Hererra attempted to pull down on her feet to make sure she died but was stopped by the crowd. Their efforts were futile however . It is said that Colonel J.D. Sena a prominent man from Santa Fe stepped forward and clarified that she had to be hung until dead.

She almost lived?
