6.1 Art Criticism Project

Staffelsee in Autumn

Introduction

Introduction

By: Rylee Haight

This project will be based on the painting: Staffelsee in Autumn, by: Gabriele Munter. In this project, I will be judging the artwork based on the Four Steps of Art Criticism, which are:

1. Description

2. Analysis

3. Interpretation

4. Judgement

Step 1:Description

Description

In this painting, I see many uses of the elements of art. In the painting, I see large mountains in the distance surrounding a big, blue lake. I see many colorful trees. Also, I see a couple of houses by the edge of the lake. In addition, I see a sheep in the green field.

In the next part of the description, I will describe how the elements of art are used in the painting.

Description: How the Elements of Art are Used

Description: Elements of Art

The elements of art are color, line, value, shape, form, space, and texture. They are all used in the artwork I chose.

The artwork uses very bright and intense colors, and there are both warm and cool-toned colors in this painting. The lake is a bright blue. The trees are shades of yellow, orange, and red. The mountains and hills surrounding the lake are shades of green.

Lines are used to outline the houses, mountains, sheep, and trees. Long lines outline the mountains, while shorter lines outline smaller things like houses.

Value show the depth and dimension in the painting. Value gives the mountains and trees more dimension and makes them look less flat.

Shape and form are used in the houses and the mountains. They give the houses and three-dimensional look as well as the mountains.

In this painting, it is mostly positive space because it is filled with objects such as mountains, trees, and houses. However, the empty space is negative.

Texture is used in the lake because it gives the lake a smooth look. Also, texture is used in the mountains to give them a more rough and steep look.

Step 2: Analysis

Analysis

For analysis, I see balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, pattern, proportion, harmony, and variety.

  • In the painting, the balance is symmetrical balance because there are very similar things on both sides.
  • Contrast is added between the mountain scenery and the sky. These represent contrast because they each are represented with very different sets of colors, but they still compliment each other.
  • While there is not an obvious emphasis on an object in the painting, I feel like the emphasis is on the house on the right because that seem to be the focal point, or the spot my eyes go to.
  • Movement is seen in the water and in the sky. The water looks like it is flowing while the wind blows.

Step 2: Analysis (continued)

Analysis (continued)

  • I see rhythm in the leaves because all of the colors sort of flow together and compliment each other.
  • The colors of the painting use pattern because the colors of the leaves (red, orange, yellow, green) tend to create a pattern.
  • I see proportion in the painting because the size of everything is realistic. For example, the mountains are bigger than the trees and the houses.
  • All of the principles contribute to the harmony of the painting. All of the principles work together to make the painting seem to work together, or have harmony.
  • Finally, a variety of colors and objects are used in the painting. There are several different colors used in the leaves, sky, and houses.

Step 3: Interpretation

Interpretation

Based on my views, I think that the painting I chose means serenity and calmness. This represents peace and happiness. This painting represents Imitationalism because it is a painting of something that could happen or something that you could see in real life.

Step 4: Judgment

Judgment

Based on my judgments and viewpoints, I think this is a very successful painting. It represents Imitationalism, and it creates a sense of calmness and serenity. I love the happy and warm colors the artist used for the trees and the mountains. I enjoy the sense of harmony and balance this painting uses as well.

The End: Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

I love this painting, and I think the artist did very well and accomplished getting the purpose of this painting across. The artist used lots of great colors as well as fantastic uses of all of the elements and principles of art. Based on the Four Steps of Judgment: Description, Analysis, Interpretation, and Judgment, I think the artist did a very great job. As a result, I had more of an appreciation of this painting than I did at first. This painting is definitely one of my favorites, and I really enjoyed it.
