The setting is in Quill, and it is also at Artime.
In the beginning of the story Alex is in Quill. It is the day of Purge, where the kids that are thirteen years old are split into three groups: wanted, necessary, and unwanted. Alex was the last unwanted to be called up to get on a bus to go to the death farm. When Alex and the other unwanteds got to the death farm, it surprised them that there was a hidden world just behind the gate. That world is called Artime. Artime is a magical place where you express your feelings.
At Artime they learn about ways to express themselves in their art. Megan very quickly moves on to magical warrior training as do the others after her. Alex is held behind though because Mr. Today does not want him to use the powers to get back to his twin brother.
When Alex starts his magical warrior training he learns how to make a painting that looks exactly like a door or window in a different location and it acts like a portal. Alex then makes one that matches Aarons door at the academy. When Alex goes to Aaron, Aaron thinks that it is a bad dream and goes back to sleep. Then Aaron goes to Artime and that starts a war between the two worlds.
The Main idea of the story is that Alex was supposed to be executed but he was saved by Mr. Today.
The problem is that Alex the unwanted is going to be executed.
The solution is that Alex is saved by Mr. Today and goes to the magical world of Artime.
