The film is about an unlikely love story.
Elio is a boy with some very fascinating parents who spend every summer going to vacation in the north of Rome (Crema). The father is a Professor at an University and each year hires a student to assist him in his theses on ancient art.
When Oliver arrives, he turns Elio's world upside down up, awakening new feelings on him. His sexual temptation was so great that they ended up dating.

The film was so applauded and so good that a new sequel was already confirmed in which it is predicted that one of the characters (Elio or Oliver) will have AIDS.
» During the filming of the grass scene, the director (Luca Guadagnino) instructed Elio and Oliver to follow the script. Elio and Oliver lie down on the grass and represent the scene, kissing and touching each other passionately. When they finish, they look around and realize that the entire cast has disappeared, leaving the two actors without being filmed!
» The name of the film is explained during the scene where Elio and Oliver spend the first night together. In a moment of great intimacy, Oliver asks Elio "Call me by your name and I will call you by mine".
» Hammer admited that he has no talent for dancing. One of the scenes in which he had to dance was particularly difficult, because the whole scene was filmed without music!
» Hammer had some difficulty adjusting to the 80's wardrobe, especially the shorts. The shorts were so short and large that in the editing it was necessary to remove the genital organs of the actor that appear in one of the scenes. Later, Hammer admited that he felt more comfortable in that outfit than in the shorts he wears today.
» The film got the longest standing ovation in New York Film Festival history.
» Armie Hammer narrated the audiobook.
» The writer André Aciman participates in the movie playing a small part.
» The director changed the year the film takes place in because of AIDS and the 80s music: he wanted the film to be more utopic and wanted to use the music from his childhood.
