6. Stress busting

In this unit we'll cover:

So, What's new? Lots!

Many college students say they notice how much more they're treated like an adult than at school.

You'll also call your college teachers by their first name- this feels strange to start with but you'll get use to it!

The majority of colleges don't ask you to wear a uniform. Smart casual is what to aim for.

More Responsibility

Attendance

You're more responsible for your learning:

You'll study independently more often than in school

You'll need to bring your own books and stationary

It's up to you to be on time, meet deadlines and keep on top of your workload

Your Attendance matters!

If you don't maintain a high level of attendance, you could be removed from the course

Many college courses set 90% attendance as a mandatory condition in order to pass

If your attendance is too low on your school record, you might not be accepted

Key differences:

College vs Sixth form

Most sixth forms offer A-Levels, whereas at college, you are more likely to focus on a vocational course, such as a T Level or a BTEC. Some colleges and sixth forms give you the option to take A Levels combined with BTECs, so make sure you do your research and see what’s out there.

Choosing a vocational course is ideal if you know a subject area you want to focus on. If not, A levels give you more variety as you can choose more than one subject.

An Extended BTEC Diploma is worth the equivalent of three A-levels, as are T Levels. Both A levels and many vocational courses are widely accepted by many universities, but it's always a good idea to check the entry requirements of the specific course.

Your timetable will also be different at college to that of sixth form. You might only need to attend college a couple of days a week, and when you’re not in class, you are trusted to go home and work independently.

At sixth form, your timetable is likely to be fuller, with areas around the college dedicated to independent study.

Some students prefer sixth form as it is more familiar, while other students are ready for the fresh start and new learning environment college provides.

What you'll need

Meet the Students...

The college experience will be different for everyone depending on where you go, what subject you study and who you meet. That said, it's always nice to hear from those who've "been there, done that!". Take a look at the following videos from Tegan, Fraizer and Emily, and Joseph and see what they think of college life.

How to apply

4. If successful, you will then accept the offer of a place on your chosen course(s)

How to Apply

Once you’ve applied for a college placement and chosen your courses, you will go through the following steps:

2. You will attend your interview and / or assessment

5. Enroll at the college!

3. You will receive the result of your interview and / or assessment

1. A member of the college team will contact you with a time and date for an interview and / or initial assessment

Keep in

mind...

- You'll need at least five GCSEs, grades 9 to 4. A pass in English and Maths is important no matter what subject you're taking at college.

- Some courses require students to have grades 5 or above, so before you apply check the entry requirements for the course.

- Your attendance, punctuality and behaviour at school are also all taken into account when a college is considering you for a course.

Stress Busting

Starting college is an exciting time. But it can feel quite scary for some: a new place, new people, new course.

If you're feeling anxious or a little overwhelmed, try to think positively about your experience rather than focusing on negative outcomes, e.g thinking no one will like you vs. you'll make lots of new friends. It will also help your nerves if you're organised in plenty of time, as you will feel more settled and ready for your first day.

Katy, from the University of Surrey, gives her top tips when it comes to managing workloads at college:
