History

Origins

Ennea (nine)

gram (a written or drawn symbol)

Original symbol goes back to Pythagoras (ca.570-490 BCE)

1915 - symbol reintroduced by George Gurdjieff, a mystic of the Middle East

1960s - Oscar Ichazo, a philosopher who explored ties between the soul and states of ego in a 9-pointed system

1970s-1990s - integrated into modern psychology and spiritual development by Ichazo & Claudio Naranjo

  • Gestalt influence - regulate through self/other-awareness
  • Jesuit priests used in spiritual retreats, namely
